Recently I have been commenting sporadically on other blog posts and articles. Today I found a blog about “Globalization: Friend or Foe?” from the OSG’s Global Issues Blog. The main point about this article was whether or not all of the products that we get from other countries is a good thing or a bad thing. There’s a large abundance of products that we get from people all over the world, who work in poor conditions such as factories and workshops. Majority of these workers are treated terribly and are payed a very low wage. Although we have a lot of resources and options of products at stores, theres an over profusion of items which makes it unnecessary to go to Costco and buy a 2 jar pack of peanut butter. Not only is the producing products wasteful, but it’s also bad for the environment. People know they have resources to replace lost items at their own fingertips. Other countries are working hard and suffering for us (America) in order to benefit our lives. I find globalization a very large issue and we are too consumed in our own lives rather than attempting to fix globalization so there’s no labour workers suffering, nor the environment.

There are positive and negative aspects about globalisation. It’s the Western society, and not only Americans, that is taking advantage of developing countries to produce continuosly without taking in account their employees’ dignity. This issue has to do with hegemony. I read that article you mentioned and I agree with what it’s argued. However, there are positive aspects too. People are increasingly traveling for leisure and professional matters, and thus getting to know different cultures better, so it can increase cultural tolerance.

Thank you! I will surely look through that blog!! I didn’t mention that there are positive aspects to globalization, but the question is, how can we fix globalization so it cant benefit not only the first world but also the third world countries?

I believe that a lot can be done by for profit organisations as they detain economical and political power – this is actually what I am writing about but focused on global issues rather than globalisation. You can take a look later – will probably post it this evening. Maybe it won’t totally answer your question, but give you some ideas. Another key-factor to bear in mind is partnerships between for profit and nonprofit organisations. One has the time, and the other has the money. Together they can build an effective synergy for a more functional society, whether we refer to developed or developing countries.

Truthfully, I’m not sure what we could do differently for globalization to not harm people or the planet. I think that globalization should definitely be recognized and known throughout the world. I know that there are probably a lot of people out minding their own lives, oblivious to this controversial issue. The more people know about globalization, there will be more likely chance that someone will stand up and try to fix things. I don’t know where to start to help the planet nor the labor workers since globalization is such a broad issue.

Hi! To begin, I am actually in that Global Issues Course you are talking about and I have read the article as well and it is fantastic! I agree with your points that globalization has had its goods and bads. It has helped countries such as China and India become more developed, but at the same time, countries such as the U.S. have become the center of the universe by becoming so focused on how to becoming number one and that has been hurting other countries. Do you think America will be able to slow down from becoming too powerful?

Hello,
I agree, globalization (or specifically, mass consumption due to globalization) is a problem nowadays. I know there are many environmental issues with mass consumption. so much is wasted, so much is used, and so much is just dumped in the ocean or in a landfill. Too much consumption also has domestic issues, aiding obesity epidemics and encouraging the value of materials. Does this also affect international relations? For example, the US relation with China?

I personally feel that as you said, mass consumption/globalization affects the international countries. It isin’t just America. There seems to be somewhat of a competition for America, China, Etc. to produce new products such as smart phones and other electrical devices. America is getting a lot of products from Asia, no doubt. It’s good that we can buy from China and China can supply us of our things, but the people in China who’re making these things are not being noticed. It’s like the manufacturers are working behing a closed door with low wage and are treated inhumane. America is not only getting the products from China, but is also in debt to China. I think that less is more and the people of America and America as a whole should really consider being more conservative.

I agree with you that our own- and international- treatment of workers who produce basic goods for us needs to change drastically, and soon. However, I don’t think it’s entirely globalization that’s causing this problem. I think we need to work to change laws within our own governments before we try to fix an “international situation.” What do you think?

Yes we need to start from scratch in the sense that we can’t jump into automatically fixing globalization relating to other countries. We need to begin with changing government laws. I certainly agree with you.

It has surely helped other countries become developed but at the same time it has hurt other countires as well. 50 years ago these people in developing countries would have been living from day to day growing their produce, tending their animals, hoping that there would be enough to go around to stave off their family from starvation. Then, Mr. Corporate America (and others) offered them just enough to ensure that wouldn’t happen. So, of course, they jumped at the opportunity – who wouldn’t? 50 years on, America (and others) still benefit from the deal. But, so do they, which is why the status quo remains. The question is what can America (and others) now offer these people? You can bet your bottom dollar that Mr. Corporate America isn’t prepared to offer anything. So, the answer is really, what can you offer? Just by raising the issue, you’ve found as good a place to start as any 🙂
